Description
Crotamiton is a synthetic, topical scabicidal and antipruritic agent. It is an amide formed from the condensation of crotonic acid with N-ethyl-2-methylaniline, and exists as a mixture of cis and trans isomers. Its molecular formula is C₁₃H₁₇NO and its molecular weight is 203.28. It is available as a 10% (w/w) cream or 10% (100 mg/mL) lotion for topical use only.

Applications
Crotamiton is primarily used as a scabicidal and antipruritic agent for the treatment of scabies and pruritic skin conditions. Its mechanisms of action are not fully understood. Additionally, it functions as a pharmaceutical excipient, serving as a dissolving agent and permeation enhancer in various topical preparations (e.g., loxoprofen sodium, indomethacin, ketoconazole). It has a mild local anesthetic effect, a specific killing effect on scabies mites, and inhibitory effects on streptococci and staphylococci.
