Description
β-Cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide composed of seven α-1,4-linked D-glucopyranose units forming a toroidal (truncated cone) structure. It has a hydrophilic outer surface and a hydrophobic inner cavity, enabling it to form stable inclusion complexes with a wide range of poorly water-soluble molecules, effectively improving their solubility, stability, and bioavailability. In cosmetics, it serves as a complexing agent for fragrances and active ingredients, ensuring controlled release and improved stability.
Stability and Storage Conditions
Store in a sealed, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from moisture and direct sunlight; recommended storage temperature below 25°C; desiccated at room temperature.
Solubility
Soluble in water: ~1.85 g/100 mL (18.5 g/L) at 25°C; soluble in ammonium hydroxide.
Storage
Store in a sealed, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from moisture and direct sunlight; recommended storage temperature below 25°C; desiccated at room temperature
Melting Point
>290°C (decomposes); 290–300°C (dec.)
Applications
In cosmetics: controlled release of fragrances in perfumes and detergents; stabilizing, solubilizing, or delivering intermediate-size molecules (e.g., menthol); stabilization of essential oils and active ingredients; protection of sensitive actives like retinol or vitamin E from oxidative and thermal degradation; in personal care products such as toothpastes, skin creams, dusting powders, shampoos, and hair care formulations; as a chiral selector in HPLC columns.
