Description
Epinastine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of epinastine, serving as the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) classified as a direct H1-receptor antagonist and mast cell stabilizer with additional anti-inflammatory properties. It works through a dual mechanism by competitively blocking histamine binding at peripheral H1 receptors and inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes, and tryptase from mast cells.
Stability and Storage Conditions
Photosensitive
Solubility
Freely soluble in water and methanol, soluble in ethanol, and practically insoluble in nonpolar organic solvents.
Storage
Store in a tightly closed, light-resistant container under cool, dry conditions, preferably at room temperature or below.
Applications
The Epinastine hydrochloride API is primarily used in the manufacture of ophthalmic solutions for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, where it relieves ocular itching, redness, and swelling. It is also formulated in oral tablets (in certain markets) for systemic management of allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and eczema, providing both rapid symptom relief and preventive anti-allergic effects.
