Description
Hard or soft capsules made from pharmaceutical-grade gelatin (derived from animal bones, skin, and tendons) with optional additives such as plasticizers, preservatives, and colorants [0†L10][6†L2-L5]. Gelatin is a translucent, odorless protein that swells in water and dissolves in hot water [0†L17-L18][7†L4].
Stability and Storage Conditions
Stable when stored properly; sensitive to moisture (hygroscopic) and high temperatures. Moisture loss can cause brittleness [0†L20][3†L5-L6].
Solubility
Insoluble in cold water (swells and absorbs 5–10× its weight); soluble in hot water, acetic acid, and hot glycerin-water mixtures; insoluble in ethanol and other organic solvents [7†L4-L5][0†L17-L18].
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Standard shelf life: 24–36 months in unopened containers.
Applications
