Description
Hydroxypropyl cyclodextrin is a chemically modified derivative of β-cyclodextrin produced by controlled reaction of propylene oxide with native β-cyclodextrin. It has a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic exterior, enabling it to form inclusion complexes with poorly water-soluble molecules. HP-β-CD exhibits significantly improved water solubility compared to native β-cyclodextrin (>500 mg/mL vs. 18 mg/mL at room temperature). It is used as a solubiliser, stabiliser, emulsifier, and odour absorber.
Stability and Storage Conditions
Stable under normal conditions. Protects encapsulated compounds against volatilisation, oxidation, photothermal decomposition. Store in tightly sealed containers, protected from light and moisture, at room temperature. Shelf life: 36 months
Solubility
Very high water solubility: ≥100 g/100 mL at 25°C; >500 mg/mL at room temperature. Substitution degree ≥4 allows miscibility with water in any ratio; also soluble in 50% ethanol and methanol.
Storage
Store in a sealed, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from moisture and direct sunlight; recommended temperature below 25°C.
Applications
Used as an active carrier, stabiliser, solubiliser, and fragrance enhancer in skin care, fragrance, hair care, toiletries, oral care, and makeup. Reduces organic molecule stimulation to skin mucosa, enhances stability of active ingredients, prevents volatilisation and oxidation, and provides long-lasting fragrance release.
