Description
Menthol is encapsulated with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) to form inclusion microcapsules, typically at a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. The embedding process is spontaneous and exothermic, with lower temperatures favouring the reaction. Menthol exhibits a stronger affinity for HP-β-CD compared to menthone. Hydrogen bonding is the dominant interaction mechanism.
Stability and Storage Conditions
Store in tightly sealed containers, protected from light and moisture, at room temperature.
Solubility
Enhanced aqueous solubility due to HP-β-CD complexation
Storage
Store in a sealed container, protected from light and moisture, at room temperature.
Applications
Provides cooling/refreshing effects in toothpastes, mouth fresheners, cosmetics, drugs, food, and tobacco. Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, and transdermal absorption promotion.
Safety
Well tolerated at recommended concentrations.
