Description
Irinotecan hydrochloride is a prodrug metabolized to its active form, SN-38. This active metabolite inhibits topoisomerase I, an enzyme essential for DNA replication and transcription. Inhibition leads to stabilized DNA-topoisomerase I complexes, resulting in irreversible DNA double-strand breaks and apoptosis during the S-phase of the cell cycle.
