Description
Methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) is a methylated derivative of β-cyclodextrin, a cyclic oligosaccharide composed of seven glucopyranose units. Methylation significantly enhances its water solubility compared to native β-cyclodextrin. It has a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic exterior, enabling it to form inclusion complexes with poorly soluble molecules. It is particularly effective at incorporating oil-soluble molecules. In cosmetics, it reduces skin irritation, enhances stability, prevents volatilisation and oxidation of nutrients, promotes transdermal absorption of active ingredients, and masks unpleasant odours.
CAS Number
128446-36-6
Stability and Storage Conditions
Stable under normal conditions. Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature (recommended +20°C / room temp). Protect from moisture and light.
Purity
≥98.0%
Solubility
Freely soluble in water; soluble in cold water; soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, and chloroform. Achieves up to 50 mg/mL or higher concentrations in water
Storage
Store in a sealed container, protected from light and moisture, at room temperature (approx. +20°C)
Melting Point
180–182°C
Applications
Cosmetics: Reduces skin irritation; enhances stability of active ingredients; prevents volatilisation and oxidation; promotes transdermal penetration; masks unpleasant odours; maintains skin moisture; reduces microbial contamination
Safety
Low toxicity profile. Methyl-β-cyclodextrin has been shown to induce caspase-dependent apoptosis in PEL cells with no significant adverse effects. In cosmetics, it reduces skin irritation compared to native β-cyclodextrin. May have haemolytic activity due to its surface activity.
