Types of Plasticizers

• Internal plasticizers

An internal plasticizer is actually a part of the polymer. Generally, an internal plasticizer is a second monomer introduced during the polymerization process of a polymer. Since the second monomer is copolymerized in the molecular structure of the polymer, it reduces the regularity of the polymer molecular chain, i.e., it reduces the crystallinity of the polymer molecular chain.

• External plasticizer

An external plasticizer is a low molecular weight compound or polymer that is added to the polymer to be plasticized to increase the plasticity of the polymer. External plasticizers are generally a high boiling point, difficult to evaporate liquid or low solubility solid, and most are organic compounds of ester type. Usually they do not react chemically with the polymer, and the interaction with the polymer is mainly the swelling effect at elevated temperatures, and the polymer to form a solid solution.
