Description
The inclusion complex is formed by encapsulating menthol molecules into the hydrophobic cavity of cyclodextrin (e.g., β‑cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl‑β‑cyclodextrin). This significantly reduces menthol’s volatility and sublimation, improves its water solubility and bioavailability, while retaining its characteristic cooling and therapeutic effects.
CAS Number
Component CAS numbers: β‑cyclodextrin 7585‑39‑9; L‑menthol 2216‑51‑5. Some water‑soluble menthol complexes are listed under CAS 96684‑39‑8.
Solubility
Freely soluble in water (due to the hydrophilic outer surface of cyclodextrin), soluble in aqueous alcohol, practically insoluble in non‑polar organic solvents.
Storage
Store in tightly sealed containers, protected from light and moisture, at cool (2‑8 °C recommended for long‑term) or room temperature (below 25 °C) in a dry place.
Applications
Widely used in pharmaceuticals as a flavour‑masking agent, as a cooling/sensory enhancer in oral and topical preparations, and to improve the stability and bioavailability of menthol in cough drops, nasal sprays, analgesic creams, and oral care products. Also used in cosmetic and food industries.
Physical State
Solid powder.
pH
5.0–7.0 (1% aqueous solution).
