Description
The inclusion complex is formed by encapsulating salicylic acid molecules into the hydrophobic cavity of cyclodextrin (e.g., β‑cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl‑β‑cyclodextrin) via host‑guest inclusion complexation. Salicylic acid is a lipophilic β‑hydroxy acid derived from willow bark, known for its comedolytic, anti‑inflammatory, keratolytic, and skin‑lightening properties. Applications
Widely used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics: treatment of acne; dermatological preparations with keratolytic, anti‑acne, and exfoliating effects
Safety
Complexation reduces gastric irritation and skin irritation/toxicity compared to free salicylic acid. After oral administration, salicylic acid is absorbed in its free form. Oral β‑cyclodextrin is unlikely to cause toxic symptoms. Children are more sensitive to salicylic acid; extensive application on diseased skin carries a risk of systemic toxicity.
