Squalene (C₃₀H₅₀) is a natural, polyunsaturated triterpene hydrocarbon (isoprenoid) consisting of six isoprene units. It is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of cholesterol and steroid hormones in animals, and of phytosterols in plants.
