Description
Sugar spheres, also known as neutral pellets, nonpareil seeds, or sugar beads, are a widely used excipient in the pharmaceutical industry. They are white, nearly spherical inert cores composed primarily of sucrose (62.5-91.5%) and maize starch (8.5-37.5%)
Stability and Storage Conditions
Stable.
Solubility
Not completely water-soluble
Storage
Kept in well-closed containers, protected from moisture, freezing, and excessive heat.
Applications
Sugar spheres serve as an ideal inert substrate for manufacturing multiparticulate drug delivery systems, especially for oral sustained-release or controlled-release pellet formulations. As they contain no active ingredient, they provide a neutral platform for low-dose, highly potent drugs. The drug is layered onto the spheres, which can then be coated with functional polymers to achieve precise, time-controlled release profiles. Their excellent sphericity, smooth surface, low friability, and narrow particle size distribution ensure consistent drug loading, efficient flow, and robust processing during manufacturing
