Cell-based Assays for Cosmetics


The human skin and its appendages are the main medium of use for cosmetics and the most intuitive vehicle to reflect the use and efficacy of cosmetics. For the safety and efficacy evaluation of skin cosmetics, in vitro cultures of various types of skin cells such as human or mouse melanoma cells, fibroblasts, keratin-forming cells, are generally used. For other cosmetic products such as hair and body products, endothelial cells, epithelial cells, adipocytes, and hair papilla cells are also used for safety and efficacy evaluations. For different efficacy and evaluation needs, specific cells are cultured or cell damage models are established in vitro, stimulated with target ingredients, cell morphology and toxic proliferation indicators are observed, and the efficacy of raw materials or finished products is evaluated by molecular biology means such as analysis of specific gene pathways and related protein expression. Due to the low economic cost, short experimental cycle, relatively stable subjects and mature operation methods, the application of cell biology methods to establish in vitro cultured skin cell models has become one of the mainstream methods for cosmetic raw material screening and efficacy evaluation of active substances.
