Nasal Sprays Formulation Development

Nasal spray is used to deliver drugs locally or systemically in the nasal cavity. They are used locally for diseases such as nasal congestion and allergic rhinitis. In some cases, nasal route is more suitable for systemic therapy because it provides a good choice for injection or pill. Drugs can be absorbed very quickly and directly through the nose, many drugs exist in the form of nasal spray for systemic administration (for example, pain, migraine, osteoporosis and nausea), and other applications of nasal spray include hormone replacement therapy, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. So nasal spray is considered a more effective way of drug delivery and can be used to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Advantages of Nasal Sprays

  • Compared to oral administration, absorption in the nose can be rapid.
  • Greater bioavailability can be achieved.
  • As long acting forms of drug injected intramuscularly or implanted into the body.
  • Absorption into the blood happens without first undergoing enzymatic degradation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract nor first pass metabolism in the liver, faster onset, and at a lower dose.
  • Systemically acting drugs could be more effective and safer when delivered intranasally directly to the blood supply within the turbinates.
